Except for the unfortunate oversight of any of the spectacular material from Grusin's soundtrack to The Fabulous Baker Boys, this 11-track compilation is a strong addition to GRP's new collector's series featuring many of its classic artists. Grusin, of course, has the unique distinction of having owned the label and has been part of its establishment as a modern jazz powerhouse. The songs cover the 20-year period from 1977 through 1997, from the time just before he and Larry Rosen formed the company through Grusin's lush homage to chief influence Henry Mancini (represented here by the marching beat and brassy humor of 'Baby Elephant Walk' and the boogie-woogie twist on 'The Peter Gunn Theme'). When Grusin and Rosen compiled and sequenced this collection, they were more interested in finding outstanding representative tracks than simply spotlighting Grusin's best compositions. That's somewhat curious, since Grusin is legendary as both a jazz and film composer, but two of his best-received projects were The Gershwin Connection and Homage to Duke, so the Gershwin boys and Ellington's songs are an essential part of the mix. Grusin-written classics include the mystical and exotic synth exercise 'Bossa Baroque' and the still spry 'Early A.M. Attitude' from Harlequin, his Grammy-winning collaboration with Lee Ritenour. -- Jonathan Widran

Re-Up this Album

Latest Release

People have been telling me for years: ‘Rit, you gotta make a solo guitar record’. In the past, I’ve always been the band guy, the collaborative-guitar-player guy. So this was the one project I had never done. It was challenging & inspiring, especially this year.

Weaving tapestries of instrumental guitar and conjuring eclectic moods, the 12 tracks of Dreamcatcher rank amongst the most melodic and tinglingly beautiful in Ritenour’s catalogue. But there’s a power and purpose here, too, hinting at the darker circumstances that sparked this new record.

Available December 4, 2020 on Mascot Label Group (Worldwide) and Yamaha Music Communications Co. LTD/Yamaha Music Foundation (Japan) with 2 Bonus tracks.

New album coming December 4, 2020!

I’m sending my warmest, sincerest regards to my fans, friends, and fellow musicians throughout the world. This year has been incredibly challenging, in all the ways, and I hope 2021 is brighter for everyone.

For me, music & the guitar has continued to be my unwavering source of inspiration. 2020 marks 60 years of playing the guitar, beginning here in Los Angeles. As I was composing & producing my new solo guitar album, ‘Dreamcatcher’, I was reminded how much I appreciate that gift.. thank you.

So, in the middle of all this noise that we’ve been inundated with, keep the music close to you. It helps… a lot!

See you in 2021!
